BBC criticised for censoring Pogues classic
Kirsty MacColl's mother has described BBC Wireless 1's determination to edit the words of the singer's famous Dec 25 strike 'Fairytale of Newly York' as "ridiculous".
The station opted to edit out the line root "You scumbag, you maggot...", leaving out the word "faggot" at the goal.
A BBC affirmation said: "Radio set 1 ar playing an edited version of the 'Fairytale of Freshly York' that does not include the world 'faggot' as this is a intelligence that members of our audience would retrieve offensive."
A interpreter said that the bible was "faded down" on air travel, rather than bleeped come out completely.
However, the mother of the recently Kirsty MacColl, wHO recorded the original version of the song with The Pogues, has criticised this conclusion.
Referring to the birdcall, Dungaree MacColl said: "These are a couple of characters. Today we have a lot of a gratuitous coarseness and... whatever from people wholly over which I think is quite unnecessary. These are characters and they speak like that."
"It's absolute hokum. Truly, this is overly ridiculous. Shane [MacGowan, The Pogues vocalist] has written the most beautiful song and these characters live, they really live, and you have such sympathy for them."
She continued: "These are a couple of characters world Health Organization ar non in the first prime of younker, I wouldn't experience thought. They are what they ar, this is the way they speak."
A spokesperson for The Pogues said: "It strikes me as very odd and I'm for certain the band will be rattling amused."
